Jennifer and David Nelson Our House of Hope and Haven of Hope Directors
David and Jennifer Nelson, Directors of Our House of Hope and Haven of Hope moved to Haiti in September 2022 after three years of serving DSM International from their home in Morris, IL. They are still in the process of building their financial support, seeking opportunities to visit new churches every time they are back in the US. David has a bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministry and an MBA in Business Administration. He brings with him 26 plus years of business experience in banking and physical security, and the weekend warrior experience of many years of home improvements and vehicle repairs. His passions are teaching and discipleship. David and Jennifer led their church's Celebrate Recovery for almost two years and they are so excited to see how God is using the sum of their life experiences for His glory in the church and in Haiti. Jennifer is an Interior Designer by trade, but has also held many volunteer and paid positions over the years. Jennifer first fell in love with Haiti in 2013, when she agreed to come on a short term mission trip at the prompting of their oldest, Jordan. Year after year, more family members joined in the annual trips to Haiti, until eventually the whole family was in love. Jordan will continue living at his home in New Lenox IL and working full time in car sales. Mikayla VanDuyne, their oldest daughter and her husband Mason maintain the family home in Morris IL. Mason is a Firefighter/ Paramedic and Mikayla is very active in the social media support of the ministry while also building her Interior Design business. Their youngest, Emma, lives at home with Mason and Mikayla and works full time in retail. The whole Nelson family embraces Haiti, and serves and sacrifices each in their own way.
Julie has always had a strong love for God. She grew up in a Christian home with parents who are in pastoral ministry. She became a Christian at a young age and felt called into vocational ministry. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute with a communications and Bible degree and married her college sweetheart, Arol McFadden. She and Arol began working at Minooka Bible Church in 1998. They have served there together since then. Julie loves being a pastor’s wife and serving within the local church in a variety of roles. Julie and Arol have 4 sons and she loves being a mom to her boys. Her sons are Micah, Carson, Rylan and Cohen. Each of these adventuresome young men bring her great joy.
In 2015, Julie went with Don Shire Ministries and Minooka Bible Church to Haiti. On this trip, Julie fell in love with Haiti and the children at the orphanage. She felt God leading her to continue helping the children in whatever way she could. She developed a program called orphanED at Minooka Bible Church to support the kids from Don Shire Ministries as they “age- out” of the orphanage. This program provides for vocational training and/or college education to give each child the best shot possible at a secure future. She continued to volunteer for DSM whenever possible.
In January 2018, she came on as staff at Don Shire Ministries and is thrilled to take deeper steps into the work in Haiti. Her role involves managing the ministries DSM has in Haiti. She oversees our missionary and staff at Our House of Hope. Please contact Julie if you are interested in sponsoring or going a short-term trip to Haiti!
